Circle Sixes

Circles, or Sixes as they used to be called, are an important part of Brownies.

First, it provides us Leaders with a nice way to organize the Brownies.  We break them into small groups and now we have ready made groups of kids who know each other.  It offers them an identity as well.  They aren't just a Brownie, they are a Pixie, an Elf or a Sprite.

It provides the older girls a level of additional responsibility and a leadership role as well.  In our Unit, my Sixers and Seconders (the "leader" and her back up) are responsible for checking to see who attended that days meeting, handing out any worksheets or information we have for the girls, and collecting anything we need collected.

Each Six (because traditionally, you put six Brownies in each group) has a song they sing.  These songs provide us with a ready made opening.  The girls gather in their assigned parts of the room at the beginning of the meeting and their Sixer or Seconder checks them in.  After that, when we call them to order, the girls line up and as we call their group, they skip around the toadstool and form a circle.

After all the different "magical little people" are in the circle, we sing our Brownie song together and say our Promise, Law and Motto!  It's a great and traditional way to start our meeting.

Until next time!
